Litsea cubeba is an aromatic plant belonging to the Lauraceae family, naturally distributed from the Eastern Himalayas through southern China and Southeast Asia to parts of Malesia. The species is recorded in Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, China, Taiwan, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia and Indonesia. In the international fragrance industry, Litsea cubeba is commonly known as May Chang or Aromatic Litsea. In Vietnam, it is known as Màng Tang, while in Thailand, local names include Chakhai-ton in the northern regions and Takhrai-ton in other areas. In Chiang Mai, Chakhai-ton is recorded as a local name for the species.
Màng Tang is known by various local names, reflecting its wide distribution and long history of use across the region:
Vietnamese Name: Màng Tang
English Names: May Chang · Mountain Pepper · Litsea Cubeba
Thai Names: ตะไคร้ต้น (Takhrai-ton) · จะไคร้ต้น (Chakhai-ton)
Chinese Name: 山苍子 (Shān Cāng Zǐ)
Litsea Cubeba is a fast-growing pioneer species that commonly occurs in open areas, along forest edges and in regenerating forest landscapes. It can grow across a broad range of elevations, from lowland areas to mountainous regions; in parts of Southeast Asia, it has been recorded at approximately 700–2,300 m above sea level. In Thailand, the species occurs in mountainous and forested areas, including Chiang Mai, where it is locally known as Chakhai-ton.
Litsea Cubeba is a shrub or small tree. Its various parts, particularly the leaves and fruits, contain aromatic compounds and release a characteristic fragrance when crushed or bruised. The species is dioecious, with male and female flowers generally occurring on separate plants. The flowers are pale yellow to creamy white and grow in small clusters in the leaf axils or on short branches. The fruits are spherical, green when immature and turning dark purple to black when ripe.
The species is characterized by relatively rapid growth and good adaptation to open environments. It commonly thrives in areas with abundant sunlight and is often found along forest edges, in open areas and in secondary forests.
The growing season may vary depending on geographical location, elevation and climatic conditions. According to botanical data from Thailand, Litsea Cubeba generally flowers from around October to February, followed by fruiting from March to August. Harvesting periods may vary depending on the region and intended use. For materials intended for essential oil extraction, the stage of fruit development can influence the chemical composition and characteristics of the resulting material.
In Vietnam, Màng Tang (Litsea cubeba) is mainly distributed in midland and mountainous regions, particularly in the northern mountainous areas. The species has been recorded in provinces including Lào Cai, Lai Châu, Sơn La, Cao Bằng, Lạng Sơn, Bắc Kạn, Tuyên Quang, Yên Bái and Hòa Bình, and is also found in parts of Central Vietnam and the Central Highlands.
Litsea Cubeba commonly grows naturally in secondary forests, regenerating forests following shifting cultivation, along forest edges and in areas with abundant sunlight, from low elevations up to approximately 1,500 m above sea level. As a relatively fast-growing species with good adaptability to open environments, Litsea Cubeba is often found in areas undergoing natural forest regeneration and recovery.
Differences in terrain, climate, elevation, soil conditions and growing environment between regions can influence the flowering and fruiting periods, as well as the chemical composition and olfactive profile of the resulting material.
The most distinctive characteristic of Litsea Cubeba is its bright, fresh and vibrant citrus profile, often reminiscent of lemon, lemongrass and green aromatic facets. Litsea Cubeba essential oil is known for its high citral content, primarily consisting of geranial and neral, which contribute to its characteristic citrus profile. However, the actual olfactive profile can vary considerably depending on the geographical origin, plant part, harvest season and extraction method. Litsea Cubeba therefore does not necessarily present as a simple “lemon” note. Depending on the source, it may reveal varying degrees of citrus, green, aromatic, spicy, floral or woody facets.
This is also why materials derived from the same species, Litsea cubeba, can offer distinctly different olfactive experiences depending on their origin and processing.
PERFUMERY & FRAGRANCE: Litsea Cubeba is a valuable material in perfumery and fragrance applications, particularly in citrus, fresh, aromatic, green and spicy compositions. Its fruit-derived essential oils and extracts can add brightness, freshness and vitality to fragrance accords while creating a natural bridge between citrus and aromatic facets.
FOOD & SPICE: Litsea Cubeba fruits are traditionally used as a spice in various parts of Asia. Their distinctive aromatic character contributes citrus and aromatic nuances to local culinary and food applications.
COSMETICS & PERSONAL CARE: Litsea Cubeba essential oil is also used in certain cosmetic, personal care and fragrance applications, where its bright citrus profile can provide a clean, natural and refreshing character.
RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT: Beyond fragrance applications, Litsea cubeba essential oil has been the subject of research investigating antimicrobial, antioxidant and other biological activities. These represent potential areas of research and application, and their suitability should be evaluated according to the specific product system and conditions of use.
Smoked Litsea Cubeba reveals a multifaceted profile, opening with a bright citrus character accented by gentle spice, smoky woody and leathery facets, and warmed by a delicate nuance reminiscent of candied ginger. The opening is vibrant and citrus-fresh, reminiscent of citronella, before developing into a complex heart of rosé geranium and warm, spicy nutmeg. On dry-down, it reveals a clean leathery character layered with smoky, wood-fire nuances and a distinctive candied-ginger warmth.
Litsea Cubeba is a plant that produces fruit once a year. In mountainous communities across Thailand, Vietnam and China, the fruit is traditionally used as a spice in cooking and for marinating meat, helping to soften or neutralize the strong aroma of meat. It is also used traditionally as an herbal ingredient.
This material is produced from fruit sourced directly from local villagers in the mountainous areas of Chiang Mai. Before extraction, the fruit undergoes a roasting and smoking pre-treatment, a traditional processing step that contributes to the material's distinctive roasted, smoky and wood-fire character
